Serving Board/Wood From Hobby Lobby/Food Safe Bees Wax Finish

I made a server out of one of these pieces purchased from Hobby Lobby last year.  It was such a great gift I decided to make another. They are affordable, easy and fast to put together.  This piece was 30 percent off and the hardware was on sale for $1.00 a piece. The rest of the materials I needed I already had.

To start I did give this piece a light sand using my mouse and 220 grit sandpaper. I cleaned the majority of it off with a tack cloth and used a chip brush to clean out the nooks and crannies of the bark.

Once the piece was cleaned I gathered water based Minwax Polycrylic, another chip brush, Beeswax and a lint free cloth.

The Polycrylic was only used on the outer bark portion. I used the chip brush to really push the sealer into the uneven regions. I used quite a bit but made sure there were no pooled or dripped areas. It does a great job to stop the bark from crumbling. The bark was dried enough to easily handle after two hours.

Instead of using mineral oil on the flat surfaces, as I did last year, I used this Beeswax. Whether this server will be used for display or for food, this product is appropriate for either as it can also be used on cutting boards. I used a lint free cloth and massaged the wax into the wood in circular motions. I let the wax soak in for 15 minutes then used another clean cloth to wipe any excess wax away following the grain of the wood.

The next day I applied another layer of wax in the same manner. I spaced the applications 12-24 hours apart. I did this same procedure three times so in all I gave the board three wax applications. I buffed with the grain between each treatment.

To attach the handles I found these tiny black screws at the hardware store. I purposely bought them short so they would not go through the back of the wood. To give the handles extra strength I first applied E6000.

So here it is! Food safe and beautiful with a sealed raw edge:) With or without handles I think these are a wonderful gift.
