Using Mod Podge and Fabric to Line Dresser Drawers

I love the way dresser drawers look lined with fabric.  It isn’t necessary but its a nice finishing touch. In my previous blog you can see I have been painting a dresser set we no longer need which I plan to sell. I had lined the drawers with contact paper when we had acquired the set. When I decided to refinish it the contact paper was very hard to remove. Getting all of it out without marking up the bottom of the drawers was definitely the most time consuming part of the project.  Most of the drawers were left with no damage but a couple did end up with a few scrapped up areas on the bottom.  I am not going using paper again. This method of using cotton fabric and Mod Podge is definitely what I now prefer.  When you want to change the fabric you just tear it out.

Lets get started:)

You will need:

Any cotton fabric of your choice and a roll cutter.

TIP: I often look at the fat quarters in places such as Walmart or Joann’s Fabric. In my area they usually run $.98.

I use my cutting mat and some kind of straight edge.

Also I find it easier to use a measuring tape rather then a ruler or yard stick.

When starting this project, if possible, remove the drawers you will be relining. It just makes it easier. Dust and vacuum out any debris and if possible keep the cat from using it as a bed while your cutting and preparing your fabric. This can be problematic in our home:)

After measuring the drawer I fold my fabric in half to make my cuts. I find its easier to cut a smaller length of fabric and go through several layers rather then cutting a large piece that could potentially be longer then my cutting mat.

Once I have my piece cut I test it out for size in the drawer.

When I had my fabric sized properly, I used it as a guide to cut my other pieces. I needed four pieces of the same width and length.

To glue my fabric into the drawers I used some chip brushes and Mat Mod Podge, one of my favorite craft products.

I spread the glue all the way into the corners in an even layer. If the drawer is large, I spread the glue and lay down the fabric in sections. I let the glue dry over night before filling the drawers.

TIP: To get wrinkles out of your fabric use a balled up piece of plastic wrap. Its an amazing trick and works to get wrinkles out of your decoupage projects as well!

As I said, I know this isn’t necessary but it I love the way this looks! I also love to do easy projects and I find this one relaxing:)

Thanks for stopping by:)
