Creating Pumpkins Using Fleece and Adding Natural Stems/Easy Sewing Project

I love decorations that have texture and fabric pumpkins give you endless options:) I made three of these in less then an hour. You can use anything you have available such as old sweaters, flannel shirts, denim, scarves, blankets, towels, pillow cases and the list goes on. This is so much fun!

These pumpkins came from a $5.00 buffalo check fleece throw I came across at Dollar General. It wasn’t something I was looking for but inspiration struck when I saw it and for that price I knew I would be able to create a few pumpkins along with a seasonal pillow. Score:)

Besides your fabric of choice you will only need a sewing needle, thread and a bowl.

The bowl is just a guide to cut a circle of your fabric with. I cut mine out an inch larger then the rim. The bowl I used had a 13″ width across the top and it made 7″ wide pumpkins.

Start stitching anywhere on the edge of the disc of fabric. Just wave the needle in and out at 1/4″ lengths and pull the thread through and gather the fabric as you make your way around the entire perimeter.

As you sew and gather the fabric edge it will quickly start to form a pouch.

Before you pull the thread tight to close the top of what will soon become your new pumpkin, stuff the pouch. I have a lot of plastic bags from the grocery store that I’m always looking to use or get rid of. But you could use  the stuffing from an old pillow you no longer want. I ended up using the bags. I like the way it makes the pumpkins look. They can have a flatter shape or you can push the sides in towards the center and give them a rounder look.

One you have completed sewing around the edge pull the thread tight and close up the gap at the top as much as possible to make sure the stuffing is hidden.

This next part is optional.  I like to put my needle down through the center and out the bottom and pull the thread through taught. Next I bring the needle back up through the pumpkin making sure to keep this stick next to the spot the needle just exited. I put the needle all the way up through the the gather at the top and again pull the thread taught. I weave the needle into the fabric at the gather and tie it off. This helps with the pumpkins all around shape.

For the stem I had my husband cut up a stick from the back yard. I really liked the look of this particular stick so I didn’t paint it or change the color in any way. I had him cut quite a few pieces of varying lengths for the other pumpkins I will probably be making this season.

This is how the first one turned out. It was so easy and fast I couldn’t help myself and I right away made two more:) I think they are so adorable and easy.  You can definitely get the kids in on this.

I could’t figure out the best way to display these at this time. All my Autumn decor is still packed. But here are a few quick ideas⇓

Have fun with these and thank you for stopping by:)
