Home Decor During The Winter Months/Simple and Cozy

Hello, This is an unintended edition to my previous blog on packing and safely storing away our Christmas decorations but still keeping some decor throughout our home, during the cold months, that provide that warm and cozy atmosphere.

Living in the Northeast is beautiful during the winter and I decided a few years ago to embrace the season instead wishing it away. That just makes the cold season drag on and feel endless. I like to keep the cozy feel of the holidays during the cold months without it looking like Christmas. Here are a few things I like to do to decorate for winter in our home.

First: I like to sprinkle greenery around our home. I use faux florals throughout the other seasons but for winter, I mainly stick to greens such as pine, lambs ear, cedar picks, eucalyptus and cotton stems.

I like to fill small containers around the house so it appears random and not fussy.

Second: I love the warmth and charm that copper and brass bring into a space. These pieces can be pricy so I’m often thrifting and going to antique stores to find these accents for around our house.

I go for more of a vintage feel in our home but I think this material warms up just about any space.

Third: Fabrics and quilts. This one is huge one in our home.

I like to change out the covers on my accent pillows on our couches and chairs. Textured and winter themed table runners,  throw blankets piled in baskets with fringe and other textures add coziness to our rooms.

The above is a beautiful recent find in a thrift shop. Its huge a huge scarf but big enough to use as a throw or just arranged in a pretty basket. I have found so many beautiful linens in our local thrift stores it has become my first stop when I’m on the hunt for throws, scarfs, draperies, tablecloths, runners, placemats, quilts and even fabrics.

This spot on my dining room wall has always been an awkward space. I’m lucky enough enough to have quilters in the family and was gifted this one last year. As luck would have it, it fits into this spot perfectly. Truth be told, I view this as winter decor but it stays up on the wall all year due to the heavily wooded area we live in.

  • Quilts make great wall decor and if your lucky enough to know a quilter ask them to make you one. ALL the quilters I know are ALWAYS looking for projects:) or If you come across a quilt you would like to use on a wall, sew some fabric tabs on the back and stick a rod on the wall. A quilt will always cozy up a spot.

Fourth: I like to use ambient lighting. I use quite a few battery operated candles to achieve this throughout our home.  I use real candles as well but only where I can keep an eye on them.(We have three cats)

I love the way darker corners of rooms become warm and inviting when candles are lit.

Fifth: I enjoy the smell of cinnamon and apple during the cold months so I use a couple of plug-ins on either side of our home. I don’t want diffusers or anything hot my cats can get at when we aren’t around so, unless I’m baking, the plug-ins work great for us to make the house smell good.

I’ve included some other pictures of these areas from different angles and our mantle which I hadn’t included entirely in any of the above images.

(Yes it is an extremely rough looking fireplace, to put it mildly, hopefully soon to be replaced)

On the mantle I’ve also included eucalyptus and some white and bronze berry stems.

I have quite a bit of blue and white decor around our home. Here I just added some lambs ear to the basket on the door and green foliage with green berries in the blue and white vase.

I also wanted to include this candid picture of Sabrina who refuses to leave me alone when I trying to take pictures.

Good luck with decorating your space!

Thank you for stopping by and stay warm and safe:)
