Jelly Jar Recycled into a Votive Candle Holder

In keeping with the Spring themed projects, I created a votive candle holder to pair alongside my previous blog project; A Spring Inspired Butterfly Garland.

Both were created using pretty floral napkins I purchased from Etsy. The decoupage technique I used on this project is perfect to apply to any container you want to decorate but still want it to be somewhat translucent for candlelight to show through.

Any smaller jar will do when creating a holder for a votive candle. I had this small jelly jar I chose to use from my stash. I really like the size and weight of the glass. I cleaned it very well using warm soapy water. Once it thoroughly dried I wiped the outside of the container off with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball before decorating.

While the alcohol dried I prepped my napkin.

I removed both plies from the back and tore the napkin into pieces. Tearing the napkin ensures there are no straight edges and makes piecing it back together during decoupaging easier. The pieces will go together more seamlessly. I tore enough pieces off the napkin to cover the sides and bottom of my jar.

Using ArtMinds Decoupage Glue and a soft flat craft brush, I attached the napkin pieces to my jar. I did overlap some of the pieces here and there when they didn’t fit together perfectly. I like doing this to give added texture and interest once a candle is inserted and the light is filtering through the design on the napkin.

I baked the jar in the oven to help set the glue and smooth out wrinkles that may have occurred.

TO BAKE:

  • Put freshly glued piece into a cold oven.
  • Set oven to lowest setting.
  • When the preheat is done turn oven off (don’t open).
  • Leave piece in the oven to cool for one hour.

*This is my favorite way to dry any decoupaged piece that I can fit into my oven.

I finished this project by giving my  jar a coat of Triple Thick for protection. It’s glossy and in my opinion adds a nice touch to a piece meant to filter soft candlelight.

NOTE:

  • Triple thick cannot be put into the oven to dry.

For the final touches I hot glued a pretty ribbon of contrasting color around the top of the jar.  On top of that I glued a string of faux pearl beads, also around the top of the jar, into the center of the ribbon.  I added a bow to one side to finish this project.
